Dr. Taqi began his career as a lecturer at the Gulf Polytechnic, Bahrain, in 1980.He obtained his BSc in engineering from Middlesex Polytechnic and his Teaching Diploma from Bolton College of Education, UK. He later pursued his post-graduate studies at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST), where he obtained his Masters and Doctoral degrees in corrosion science and engineering, 1983 and 1986 respectively.

He joined the University of Bahrain as an Assistant Professor at the College of Engineering and in later years he was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor. He held several senior academic and administrative positions including Vice-president for Planning and Community Service, Dean of Student Affairs, Chairman of Mechanical Engineering Department, Chairman of Chemical Engineering Department.

He was appointed Assistant Undersecretary for Curriculum and Training at the ministry of Education.

As part of career development he completed many programs including Harvard Executive Program, University Administration in the United States, citizenship Education in the UK , and Civic Education in the United States.
